چکیده
Blighiasapida is a plant belonging to the family of Sapindaceae. This study is aimed at evaluating the hypoglycemic and possible in vivo antioxidant activities of the aqueous extract of the stem bark of the plant for 21 days in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Administration of the extract at 100mg/kg body weight significantly (P<0.05) decreased blood glucose levels, increased body weight as well as increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in the plasma and liver tissues of diabetic rats. Also, the concentration of reduced glutathione increased in the plasma and liver tissues of the diabetic rats while the levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl significantly decreased in the plasma and liver tissues of alloxan-induced diabetic rats during the course of the experiment. These are indications of antihyperglycemic and antioxidant properties of the stem bark of Blighiasapida with 100mg/kg body weight of the extract showing good hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities by comparing favourably well with metformin, a standard hypoglycemic

Background: Chromolaena odorata (C. odorata) is a medicinal plant with hypoglycemic effect known in traditional medicine. The present study investigated the in vitro antioxidant and in vivo anti-hyperglycemic effect of the methanol root extract of C. odorata in rats. Methods: Phytochemical compositions were evaluated, using standard procedures while the antioxidant activities were examined, us...
متن کاملAnti-hyperglycemic Effects of Saffron and its Active Constituents, Crocin and Safranal, in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats
Background: Saffron is the dried stigmata of the flowers of saffron (Crocus sativus L., Iridaceae). Saffron and its major active constituents, crocin (crocetin glycoside), crocetin and safranal, have a variety of pharmacological effects including high antioxidant properties and crocetin has insulin sensitizing effect possibly due to its antioxidant activity. Oral crocin is not absorbed and is h...
متن کاملPhytochemical and Antioxidant Activities of Berberis integerrima and Berberis vulgaris and Pharmacological Effects of the more Active Species on Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats
Background: Medicinal plants with biologically active components such as antioxidant and antidiabetic are useful sources of novel therapeutics. In Iran, traditionally believed that the aqueous extract of berberry fruit (Berberis integerima F.) improved health, especially in people with diabetes. Objective: In this study, in vitro phytochemical and antioxidant activities of B. integerrima and...
متن کاملStudy of hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic and antioxidant activities of Iranian Mentha spicata leaves aqueous extract in diabetic rats
This study was conducted to evaluate the hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic and antioxidant properties of Mentha spicata (Labiateae) leaves aqueous extract (MSLA) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. In this study, hyperglycemia was induced in male rats by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/kg). The aqueous extract of M. spicata was orally administered at a dose of 300 mg/kg b...
